What Is a Churros?

A churros is a fried pastry stick coated in cinnamon and sugar, originating from Spain and Portugal. Similar to doughnuts but with ridges, churros are piped from a pastry bag before being fried, giving them a crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior.

How to Make Churros

While the full ingredient list and instructions are in the recipe below, here's a quick overview of the process:
Ingredients:
1 cup water
2 ½ tablespoons white sugar
½ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 quarts oil for frying
½ cup white sugar (or to taste)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Directions:
Step 1: Gather Ingredients
Start by collecting all the ingredients you'll need for this recipe. Make sure you have 1 cup of water, 2 ½ tablespoons of white sugar, ½ teaspoon of salt, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 2 quarts of oil for frying, and ½ cup of white sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon for coating the churros once fried.
Step 2: Combine Water, Sugar, Salt, and Oil
In a small saucepan, combine the 1 cup of water, 2 ½ tablespoons of sugar, ½ teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Place the saucepan over medium heat, and bring the mixture to a boil. Once it starts bubbling, remove the saucepan from the heat and set it aside to cool down slightly.
Step 3: Add Flour and Mix
Next, stir in the 1 cup of all-purpose flour into the saucepan with the wet mixture. Keep stirring until the mixture comes together and forms a ball of dough. The dough should be thick, smooth, and slightly sticky, so make sure to give it a good mix to avoid any lumps.
Step 4: Heat Oil for Frying
In a deep fryer or large deep, heat the 2 quarts of oil to 375°F (190°C). It's important to check the temperature using a thermometer so that the churros fry evenly and turn golden without burning. Once the oil is hot enough, you’re ready to start frying!
Step 5: Pipe the Dough Into Hot Oil
Now, transfer the dough into a sturdy pastry bag fitted with a medium star tip. Carefully pipe 5- to 6-inch strips of dough into the hot oil. Work in small batches to prevent the churros from overcrowding the fryer, which can cause uneven cooking. Fry just a few churros at a time for the best results.
Step 6: Fry Until Golden and Crispy
Allow the churros to fry for a few minutes, turning them occasionally, until they turn a beautiful golden-brown color and become crispy on the outside. This should take around 3 to 4 minutes per batch. Once they’re perfectly crisp, use a slotted spoon or spider to carefully remove the churros from the hot oil.
Step 7: Drain and Coat with Sugar and Cinnamon
Place the fried churros on paper towels to drain any excess oil. While they’re still hot, roll them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture, making sure they are coated evenly. This will give the churros that sweet, flavorful crunch everyone loves.
Step 8: Serve and Enjoy
Now that your churros are golden, crispy, and coated in cinnamon-sugar, they’re ready to serve! You can enjoy them as they are, or for an extra indulgent treat, serve them with a chocolate dipping sauce or a side of your favorite sweet dip.
